John, as you say. Lenny Bruce lost his popular appeal about the time
that fame went to his head. I recognize that many younger readers
don't know who Lenniy Bruce was, having never heard him perform.

I love George Carlin as well, but as you will recall, George went
though a change midpoint in his career, and actually I never
understood what caused this, or why. I'm pretty sure that you realize
what I mean. He will be missed by many people.

Fortunately George lived a reasonable long and productive life, unlike
so many other comedians. You can't count them on the fingers of one
hand, possibly two, but I wouldn't want to bet serious money on even
that. Their mortality rate is far worse than that experienced by those
who make a living in pryotechnics. This tendency for relatively young
comededians to die young has increased over the years, not Carlin who
I believe was 71, but others. Is it the pressures of performing, the
drugs and alchol, or simply the overall lifestyle? Maybe silly, but
there is a popular rumor among performers that if you manage to make
it to becoming a star attraction in Las Vegas, it will literally kill
you. Go figure.

Clemens was a very interesting guy. I love his writing, and my very
favorite is about his "Burglar Alarm." I love his satire, which I
suppose that some of my writing today is based, but today many people
seem incapable of appreciating either satire and pathos.

While Clemens was a 'son of the South' and spent much time on the big
river, few people realize that the final years of his life were spent
in his final home in Hartford, Connecticut, Mark Twain is buried in
his wife's family plot in Elmira, New York. His home in Hartford
remains a National Historiic Site.

John, damn, his humor was so great!
