Hi Everyone,
I have been having ALOT of trouble with getting nice clean, and
straight cuts with paper motor tubes. I have found a nice solution
however that I thought I would share, just in case anyone else has had
trouble with this, and has access to a decently stocked shop. All you
need is a metal lathe, and an old lathe bit, I used an old cut off
tool, It also helps if you have a wooden dowel that will perfectly
match the ID of your tubes. All you need to do is sharpen the old bit
into a very thin, and razor sharp cutoff tool. I used my old bench
grinder to do this. Then just secure the dowel in your lathe. Insert
the dowel into your tube (making sure it is a tight fit), but don't
cut tubes longer than 12" or they will get high speed wobble, and
secure the dowel in your chuck. Bring the speed up to around 2500 and
use the newly made and sharpened tool to make some PERFECT cuts. Just
though I would help save some people some time, or save some tubes...
So far this method has made the cleanest cuts I have seen, nicer than
factory cuts, and yes I have tried a bandsaw (blades didn't like paper/
glue), hacksaw (absolutely horrible cuts), scroll saw, and a razor
blade jig I made. Im sure someone has already posted this method
somewhere, but I could not locate it.
BTW: I tested Phil's tubes with some whistle mix, and they made
excellent whistle rockets. The spiral tubes held up just fine.
Bob
