It's always alumina which is just another name for aluminum oxide. You
are thinking of activated alumina, which has a large surface area, and
does indeed absorb water. The stuff consists of tiny particles stuck
together to get the surface aream, and then you cook it to remove
absorbed g*****, same as with silica gel or activated charcoal.
