We're both gluing on flat surfaces, because I'm making it hem-like.  I
crease, lay it around the match, then fold the overlap on its inside
surface.  So there's a loop around the match, and a flat part that
sticks out one side.  Another layer can be added if desired, wider,
with its glued part on the opposite side from the 1st.

What's the advantage of that?  If it's injured while I make it around
the match, that's when it can be fixed.

Why is that better than marking on a full pipe?  Or, if you don't want
to waste piping & match, using the bare match and tying colored thread
at intended branch points?

Maybe what you write would make sense in a high volume operation with
more than 1 set of hands.
