Without metal fuels, they can be tempermental.  Take heart, though.  
Until we released the Eco-Tech Pyrotechnics line, all of our colors were 
perchlorate-based, and many had no metal.

It just takes work and tuning.  The carbon will be very im****tant in 
stars with no metal fuel.
