Pink star

I found this formula for a pink star---
Potassium perchlorate   70
Red Gum                 10
Strontium Carbonate     12
Charcoal                1
Dextrin                 4
 What I would like to know is, what does the charcoal contrubute to
this?  Also their was no mention of what mesh charcoal, so what would
AF do compaired to 80 mesh?  I don't have enough chem's to waste on
trials if someone has the answers. thanks
