Indeed it is far cheaper, those tests were just for people who wanted
to experiment on a small scale, but didnt want to try to make or for
some reason it was a hassle to get black powder. you can lift small
shells 2 inches with the method robg describes with fffg goex pinnacle
golden powder, clean shot fffg pioneer powder, thats about it, pyrodex
you need lots of confinement and ive had stuff blow up or not go up at
all. Ive also had a pyrodex rocket turn into the loudest salute ive
heard, with a bright white flash, so the list above is just based on
how much confinement is needed to lift a shell, pyrodex being the
slowest and goex fffg the fastest in open air thus needing less
confinement. I just did the tests for fun using small shells, it wasnt
that expensive bc i had half a can of the stuff around from trying it
in my muzzle loaders, but i wouldnt go out and buy them all over
again, if i was deperate id get the fffg pinnacle to do small stuff.
pyrodex under the right cir***stances highly packed and in a very
tight rocket engine non end burning can turn into a bomb if the clay
nozzle is too small and very strong, also too expensive and
inconsistent for rockets, but the stuff can make your ears ring under
the right cir***astances, not that I encourage anybody to try that.
What happened is as if you put pyrodex in a 45-70 government and
packed the bullet and powder too tight, might destroy your gun. The
stuff burns very hot under confinement as does triple 7
