The fixture make/model should have a compatible lamp list someplace.
This is what a High Pressure Sodium lamp looks like,

But you say the lamp is only 5/16" thick at its widest, so I don't think
it would be a discharge lamp. Was the fixture very bright? Is it indoor
or
outdoor? The metal caps are directly on the glass, or is there white
ceramic in between the glass and terminal?
I would say it could be something like this;

Except those are much wider than 5/16".
The only other thing I can think of would be a CCFL or an
Electroluminescent (but neither of those are ever very bright.)
