One picture is worth a thousand words for sure!

Some things to consider:

Verify that these are the original antennas that came with the system.
length is critical for tuning.
according to this handy calculator
http://www.crompton.com/wa3dsp/hamradio/antcalc.html
they should be about
16
inches long

Make sure that the antennas don't touch each other or any metal.

I believe you could orient the 2 left antenna to horizontal and angled
slightly towards the window without jeopardizing you eyesight. the right
antennas could then be placed vertical. The difference in orientation can
be
as much as 30 dB of received signal strength.

Make sure the antennas are fully extended.... or if they are replacements
extend them only to original length. Longer is not better (in this case
<g> )

These already have a short extension, they plug in the back. make sure the
BNC's on the back are in place and have not oxidized over time.

You can make an effective antenna from a piece of coax cable by stripping
back to the same length as the telescoping rods. Let the ****eld hang down
as
a counterpoise (ground plane). this can be taped to the outside wall or
window.

A scanner type antenna or an 2-way antenna cut to length will work.

Telex makes an adaptor so that their 5/8 wave antenna could be easily
mounted to a mic stand.(part AB-2)

Larson is one respected maker of VHF/UHF antennas
http://www.radialllarsen.com/products_mobile_2.htm
select an antenna and
an
appropriate mount and cut to length. They make one that mounts through
and
works through glass. Meant for automotive applications I have used this
type
in the past and found them effective.
