Columbia was pretty well-behaved in that respect. For the most part you
could switch to mono on the mode selector and the mono sound would be
restored. On RCA you'd get that unnatural delay of a fraction of a
second between right and left (Damn Yankees and Paint Your Wagon come to
mind) and MCA "American Decca" would still sound as if the speaker had
fallen down a drainpipe (Guys & Dolls and ****gy and Bess will live in
infamy). 

I tried House of Flowers and Mary's studio cast album of Girl Crazy in
Columbia's simulated stereo and they were all right if you switched
preamp/receiver to mono mode. I have other Columbia LPs from mono era
but I managed to get true mono copies. As far as I can tell a lot of
them (archy and mehitabel, the studio cast Pal Joey, the '46 Show Boat)
stayed mono.
