I wouldn't say they did not *know* the song, nor would I judge them as
lowbrow if they did not. The things I didn't know about pop culture in
those days stagger me today.

In my general observations about such things I'd say familiarity with
"show tunes" was something a nineteen-year-old would profess in order to
stay *out* of Vietnam.

I was bringing that album home from the store on a bus one day in '68
when I was (signal breaking up) years old and I met another guy from my
school. Showed him the album and he had a pretty "lost" expression on
his face. Yes, I had other friends who were not lost at all on such
topics.

Bought it partly because I was curious about the "Re-channeled for
Stereo" technology. Boy was my own facial expression screwed-up when I
played it.
