Another novel worth tracking down is Douglass Wallop's THE YEAR THE
YANKEES LOST THE PENNANT, which of course became DAMN YANKEES.
(There's a recent paperback reprint with a new introduction by
baseball writer/Red Sox consultant Bill James.) Interesting in that
the book's equivalent of Gloria the Wa****ngton s****tswriter is a
prissy male columnist from New York, and that the novel's Lola is much
more demure than Gwen Verdon...
