Carol Channing on the Tonys told how she'd understudied Eve Arden in the
Broadway production, and she'd thought it would be a good idea if,
instead of letting Danny Kaye sing Let's Not Talk About Love fast and
herself slow, that she should sing her part fast too.

"The result of this was: I was fired."

The ironic ending to her story was that, two decades later, Eve replaced
Carol in the Chicago production of Dolly. Betty Grable would replace
Eve.
