Sorry if this is off-topic, but with our New Orleans theatre community
still spread out all over the country this seems to be the best way to
get the word out.
The New Orleans Theatre Community lost one of our brightest lights
this past Sunday when multiple Big Easy and Storer Boone Award-winning
actress and vocalist Cynthia Owen died suddenly in Las Vegas on the
eve of her 45th birthday. Cynthia had been in Vegas to see Bette
Midler for her birthday and was being treated for a bad case of
sciatica at the time. The coroner pronounced her death as accidental
overdose of painkillers.
The daughter of New Orleans actress Lyla Hay Owen, Cynthia Owen was a
major theatre and cabaret star in the 1990's earning Big Easy and
Storer Boone Awards for her starring roles in "Sweet Charity," "Funny
Girl," "Cabaret," and "Evita." With cabaret partners Harry Mayronne,
Jr. and Chris Domroe, she headlined at The Mint and in clubs
throughout the region. Cynthia also performed extensively in Chicago,
New York, Boston, and as a featured entertainer onboard the Delta
Queen and the American Queen steamboats. Her memorial is set for this
Saturday, July 12th at 4pm in Trinity Church in New Orleans. Her
husband, former New Orleans lawyer Jim Holmes has requested that
expressions of sympathy be made in the form of a donation to The
Actor's Fund (http://www.actorsfund.org)
If you would like to leave a comment or remembrance for her family and
friends, you may do so online at stageclick.com or at groups.yahoo.com/
groups/nopa.
Thank you to the members of ratm for your kind indulgence.
