Though your post above was the first I knew of the HELLO, DOLLY!
connection to WALL-E, I had no idea that the two DOLLY numbers were
repeatedly referenced throughout the film, not just during the
opening. At one point it seemed like for sure they were also going to
show/play "Dancing," but that didn't happen. It was a quirky and
surprising element of the film, and when Wall-E is first shown
reacting to "It Only Takes a Moment," I was a bit touched. I can't
say, however, that the film as a whole did anything much for me. The
animation was terrific, but nothing that seemed like a huge
breakthrough at this point. It was entertaining for what it was in a
kiddie-movie kind of way, and I didn't get the supposed anti-
capitalist theme that some are accusing it of (to criticize excess
consumption is not the same as criticizing capitalism, as excess
consumption has always existed in statist countries among the
politically well-connected). Except for the DOLLY element, I think
the film is kinda forgettable.

The use of the DOLLY songs was a bit puzzling, since neither of the
songs are what I would consider to be popular, recognizable standards,
which is what I would have expected. I'm sure a good ****tion of the
audience never even saw the film of DOLLY or recognized the music, and
I bet a lot wouldn't even know what was being shown and heard was from
the film of DOLLY. I wonder how DOLLY particularly came to be used.
Not that there was anything wrong with using it, but it could have
been anything (okay, maybe not the "Epiphany" from SWEENEY, but you
know what I mean).
