It is one of the basic precepts of communications -- probably the most
fundamental: You cannot not communicate.
In this case, believing that a word does not influence you is abdicating
your own control over it, and throwing to the wind any possible control
over how others will perceive your own response to the word -- and, by
extension, your usage of the word.

Choosing not to be affected by the communication is communication.
