TV tie-in to musicals: It's a Bird...

There was an I've Got a Secret episode from '66 shown recently in which
the celebrity guest was Bob Holiday from the cast of It's a Bird, It's a
Plane, It's Superman: The secret was that he was going to teach emcee
Steve Allen to fly! So after the commercial they were both wired for
flight (these are not tiny guys either, but the wires were barely
visible) and "Superman" told him to say the secret words "Up, up and
away!" Steve said "I thought it was 'Tinkerbell lives!'" So "Soopy"
(don't ask) flew first and it was whoosh across the stage and off.
Amazingly, aggresively fast. Then Steve took off and he whooshed a
little to stage left and then dangled around looking like, well, Steve
Allen.

It had been Betsy Palmer's idea: She said that if she was going to fly
in her upcoming Peter Pan then others should also be able. Arguably this
TV game show was better at plugging Betsy's appearances since Superman
would close within four months. Holiday said, though, that the audiences
were responding well to the musical (What else could he say?), so it
seems that reviews must have done it in. Maybe more exposure like this
would have helped it find its audience, or maybe not.

Seeing Steve Allen and Superman together onstage helped clear up an
ongoing rumor at the time, however, that Steve Allen was secretly --
Clark Kent!
