Bernstein, of course, was very crafty with his use of "leitmotif"-like
themes and theme development in his theatre scores - most evident in
"On The Town" (where the 4 notes that make up "New York New York"
become the basis for many other melodies, when transformed in certain
ways) and of course "West Side Story."

I think my favorite "theme" moment in "West Side Story" happens during
the last section of "Tonight" - from the moment where Maria goes back
inside (and Tony sings to himself) - underneath the melody of
"Tonight" here Bernstein first introduces the melody of "Somewhere" -
you first hear it when Tony sings, and the notes that will later
become the phrase "there's a place for us" continue several times as a
countermelody. Really amazing once you realize it's there.
