in the '74 Broadway production it just happens suddenly that Mabel,
after she leaves the Sennett studio, turns to other things and gets
involved in the drugs and murder.

the original ending as heard on the Lp really makes him sound callous
and clueless.

Part of the revision I recall was, when Mabel's drug addiction is first
mentioned out loud, the insertion of a line that it was probably the
hectic work schedule with Sennett that made her turn to drugs *before*
she left his studio.
