To modify your post, there's not necessarily the need for a happy
ending. What's needed is the answer to the question, "Why tell the
story?" and a happy ending is the easiest way to fulfill the question.
Notice I say fulfill and not answer, because the question can be
answered, but not necessarily fulfilled. A cheap happy ending does not
fulfill the question either. Without the ending, COMPANY doesn't
fulfill the answer, whereas AVENUE Q does take a cheap answer, "Maybe
you'll never find your purpose," and says, "Okay, but that's only the
answer 'For Now'." That-- I think the audience accepts.
