Perusing the manual (and talking with tech sup****t) I noticed that
there's a feedback section (where the dimmer can re****t what it thinks
is going on). So I decided to wait until a light came on uncommanded
(this was before the show) and ask the dimmer why it was doing that. It
turns out that that particular dimmer thought it got a signal from
"BUMP", and the other dimmers were properly obeying "DMX". The test
button can be set as "Bump" or as "Latch" (Bump means stay on as long as
the test button is pressed, latch means the test button is an on/off
toggle) Ours were set for latch. When I programmed it as bump, the
problem went away.
So, it appears that every now and again the dimmer gets a stray bump
signal which latches it on. Now if it gets a stray bump signal, it will
be brief and not noticed. The immediate problem is solved.
So... now the mystery is "what (besides a flaky test switch) could cause
a momentary bump command?"
