Here in Perth, Western Australia, we are a hop, skip and jump away
from the Spare Parts Puppet Theater in Fremantle.

One can bring a classroom full of students to the theater and get
both an introduction to puppets and a show for one great deal. Or,
as an adult you can sign up to volunteer helping to build new
puppets or restore old ones. Either way, look around for similar
places in your local area.

Good luck with your quest.
