Yeah, absolutely. In the Byzantine web of rights to music, an artist has
an
absolute right to perform and record any song listed by a public rights
distribution agency but cannot change the words.
Now they will need, ex post facto (as we lawyers say), to negotiate a
specific and much higher performance fee directly with the publi****ng
company. And AI will have to take their offer or face litigation over
damages for infringement, PLUS they could be unable to sell the tune on
iTunes.
Jeff could misbehave all he wanted, apparently, until he committed the
capital sin -- interfering with AI's income stream.
Well, thank heaven for the recording industry. It gives lawyers and
journalists someone to look down on, ethically.
